Madhubala' s birth anniversary : Some lesser known facts



Madhubala, the famous actress from the past, celebrates her birthday today. On February 14, 1933, the legendary diva was born. Madhubala's beauty and charm have continued to catch the imagination of people, as seen in popular classics such as Mahal, Chalti Ka Naam Gadi, and Mughal-e-Azam.

The Jhumroo actress is still recognised as one of Hindi cinema's most charming and versatile actors decades after her death in 1969. The vibrant celebrity has left an indelible mark on people's minds, from her well-publicized personal life to her terrible death at the age of 36.

On the occasion of Madhubala's birth anniversary this year, here are some lesser-known facts about the great actor:

- She was born in New Delhi to Ataullah Khan and Ayesha Begum as Begum Mumtaz Jehan Dehlavi. 

- Madhubala was the fifth of eleven siblings and began working in the film industry when she was nine years old.

- Her first film as a child star was the 1942 picture Basant, in which she played Baby Mumtaz.

- She developed good friends with another young performer, Baby Mehjabeen, later known as Meena Kumari, while working as a child actor.

- Devika Rani, an actor-producer, was drawn to the young star and convinced her to alter her name to Madhubala.

- Her debut film, Neel Kamal, starred Raj Kapoor and was released in 1947.

- Before landing her big break in the 1949 supernatural thriller Mahal, the accomplished beauty, widely known as Venus of Bollywood and India's Marilyn Monroe, went through a lean period.

- Madhubala followed Mahal's breakthrough by releasing a string of hits one after the other. In films like Kala Pani, Tarana, and Howrah Bridge, she was paired with notable performers of the time like Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, and Ashok Kumar. According to reports, she was offered a picture by Hollywood director Frank Capra, but she turned it down.

- During the filming of her flicks, she was prone to giggling at inopportune times.

- According to sources, she was also a huge dog lover who had 18 pets at one point. 

- In 1961, she received only one nomination for the Filmfare Best Actress Award. 

- Her performance as the courtesan Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam earned her the nomination. 

- Due to her father's meddling, her romance with Mughal-e-Azam star Dilip Kumar terminated. The marriage proposal from Kishore Kumar was later accepted by the Howrah Bridge actor. 

- At the age of 27, she was diagnosed with Ventricular Septal Defect. Doctors in London warned her she just had two years remaining, according to reports.

- Due to illness, the Bollywood's Venus passed away on February 23, 1969. She has been adored by generations of moviegoers.
